Unit Evaluation

I enjoyed the freedom we got with this brief. As I enjoyed the horror genre it was great fun to watch some of my most loved programmes as research. Since I have watched all of the American Horror Stories it was great already having an understand of the storyline and how I could fit a character in, also how those characters would play off and fit with the existing characters on the show.
I found a lot of research about Victorian freak shows so this helped alot when developing my character. Looking into the different "freaks" of the time and choosing where I could go with my character. I felt I had a lot of creative freedom when making these choices which I liked.
I enjoy open briefs like this where you can pretty much go anywhere with your ideas. I feel a lot more creative like that.
I was really happy withe the way my Claudia turned out. I wanted her condition to be exaggerated and I think I portrayed that well through my makeup application. I also experimented with the hair doing something I hadn't done before and I think it payed off well for my character.
Although I was happy with my character development for Quentin I don't think I pulled the application off as well as I could of. At first I thought him mirroring Claudia's character by having the same model would be an interesting idea. However I don't think he looks masculine enough and instead ended up looking like a women dressed as a man, and not very well. which is not what I wanted to achieve.
I also don't think the natural lighting in my final images for Quentin worked. It didn't show off the makeup the way I wanted to. Ive learned not to work in a studio alone in case things like the flash breaking do happen, as I was unable to fix this alone which led to the use of natural light.
Overall I did enjoy this unit and I was pleased with the Claudia I produced however, I was disappointed with my Quentin as I don't feel my ideas payed off well in execution.

Quentin Final Look

Although I liked my initial idea of Quentin. I wasn't very happy with the lighting in these photos as I was working in the studio alone and the flash wasn't working so they are natural lighting and therefore I don't think the makeup has come across as well as I'd hoped. I wish I had time to reshoot these images with better lighting.

Quentin Hair Step by Step

Needed;
pintail comb
hair band

Method;

1. Part the hair on the side.
2. sweep all the hair into a low pony tail
3. spray the sides of the hair backwards and smooth down.
4. frame the face by swooping one side of the hair slightly over the forehead.
5. apply a fedora.

Quentin Makeup Step by Step

needed;
Foundation pallet
concealer pallet
Spirit gum
Fake hair
Contour shades, grey tones
brow pomade.

Method;

1. Apply foundation and concealer problems areas.
2. contour the face into a masculine shape, focusing on the cheekbones and the jawline. 
3. apply the spirit gum to the top lip and wait for it to go sticky.
4. roll a brush in the fake hair and roll downwards onto the tacky spirit gum.
5. trim the loose hairs into the moustache shape.
6. shade around the side burn area. 
7. fill in the brow so it is straighter, thicker and more masculine.

Quentin Face Charts

On this face chart Quentin has a curled upwards moustache although I like the look of this I think it will be hard to create without using a fake tash which wont look real.

On this I gave Quentin a lot of stubble however this wasn't usually seen in the 1950's

this is my final face chart. Quentin is contoured and has a straight moustache.

Quentin Hair Charts

this hair is simply swept back into a low pony tail. This takes the hair off the face and gives a manly appearance.

This hair is also in a low pony tail however it is parted in the middle and swept back at the sides to frame the face.

this is my final hair design, It is side parted and swept back at the sides. A slight fringe frames the face as it all comes back into a low pony tail. I've added a fedora. A hat commonly worn in the 50's by men.

Quentin Moodboard

This is my Quentin mood board. I have included the two pictures which inspired my design. One, a modern interpretation of a 1950's male and the other, a character from the show.

Ive included a poster for the freak show as this is Quentins business. Ive also included the "big top".

Quentin Character Development

Quentin is a figment of Claudia's Imagination. 

She hears about a freak show in town and imagines that he is the joint owner with Elsa Mars. This is somewhere in which Claudia can feel she belongs and so she feels safe with Quentin.

As he is part of Claudia's imagination I want him to mirror her in some ways. This is why I have chosen to not only use a female model, but to use the same model used for Claudia. He is essentially part of her and so she feels very much at one with him.

Quentin is a typical 1950's male with a moustache.

The key word Ive chosen as inspiration behind Quentin is "Door". I feel he is essentially the door for Claudia who has agoraphobia. He helps her open up and leave the house now that she feels part of a family.

Claudia Final Look

This is my final face chart for Claudia.

Im really happy with the way these turned out as I think I recreated the face chart very well. Although the lighting is dark I think it helps to give a dark, Gothic feel to the pictures.

This is my final Claudia Makeup, to achieve this I used the step by step below.

Method;

1. Apply the foundation all over the skin and conceal problem areas.
2. apply the scale effect mentioned in a previous blogpost.
3. apply the tissue paper effect mentioned in a previous blogpost
4. fill in the eyebrows with Anastasia dip brow pomade
5. apply a pink blusher to the apples of the cheeks
6. apply matte lip cream to the lips
7. apply duo eyelash glue to the lips and distress with finger while it dries.

Claudia Hair Step by Step

This is my hair chart for Claudia, to achieve this I followed the step by step below.

needed;
Pintail comb
Paddle brush
hair curler

Method;

1. Brush through the hair
2. Section the hair so that there is a deep side part.
3. section the hair behind the ears to form two from sections. clip these out the way.
4. curl the rest of the hair and pin it.
5. Undo the front sections and curl these.
6. working one section at a time, lift the hair up and taught. curl back down towards the face twisting inwards as the curl reaches the head.
7. repeat on other side.
8. undo the pin curls and slightly brush out.
9. smooth over the hair to eliminate fly aways.

This is the first time I practiced the victory roll hair style.
